New England is no stranger to a winter storm. When snow and ice greet our area, however, it’s important to ensure the safety of our homes and businesses. Ice and snow can build up outside a building and cause damage to your utilities.

To prevent utility damage, be sure to clear ice and snow from your meters and vents. Use a broom to keep gas meters and pipes clear during the winter. Chimneys and vents for gas appliances must be cleared following a major snow or ice storm to ensure proper venting and prevent carbon monoxide build-up inside your dwelling. Be sure to install a carbon monoxide detector inside to help you stay safe from carbon monoxide poisoning and install protection above your gas meter to prevent ice build-up on the meter and metering equipment.

  • Do not use a shovel to keep equipment clear of snow and ice because it can damage the meter.
  • Do not shovel snow up against the meter or vent pipe.
  • Remove icicles from overhead eaves and gutters to prevent icicles from falling and damaging equipment or dripping water from splashing and freezing on the meter or vent pipe.
  • Do not kick your gas meter to break or clear ice.
  • If you smell gas, immediately leave the area, do not try to turn off your gas or use any electronic devices such as a cellphone or light switch, and when in a safe place call 911 and Unitil.

If you cannot safely remove the roof snow and ice yourself, contact a qualified roofing contractor.
