Project Update:
During work to retire a pipeline near Tukey’s Bridge, we discovered the pipeline is much deeper underground than anticipated, which changes the scope of the project. The area has been restored, and the Back Cove Trail is now reopened to the public, with no planned closures for the rest of 2025. We will determine next steps and will keep the community informed on any future plans for the area.
10/10/2025 Update:
Due to construction and weather delays, the Back Cove Trail at Tukey’s Bridge in Portland will remain open until Monday, October 20. Work to retire the gas pipeline is expected to begin early morning on October 20.
Unitil, a provider of natural gas and electricity in New England, will conduct gas pipeline maintenance on the Tukey’s Bridge section of the Back Cove Trail from Monday, Oct. 6, through Friday, Oct. 17, 2025. Due to the complexity of the project and the narrowness of the path, it is not possible to allow pedestrian or bike traffic while the work is in progress.
During this period, the trail will be closed to the public. Residents and visitors are encouraged to seek alternate routes. Signage will be posted at trail entrances, and two large electronic message boards will be placed at the main Back Cove Trail parking areas to alert trail users of the closure.
Unitil and its contractors are working with city officials to ensure safety and minimize disruption.
