Unitil, a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, encourages Massachusetts homeowners and renters to take advantage of energy-efficient programs through Mass Save as rising temperatures impact household energy usage.

Mass Save is a collaboration of Massachusetts' electric and natural gas utilities and energy efficiency service providers that empowers residents, businesses, and communities to make energy-efficient upgrades.

Since hot summer days can impact overall energy usage, we are encouraging homeowners and renters to take advantage of Mass Save’s most popular initiatives, which include rebates and incentives for upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and products,” said Unitil’s External Affairs Director, Alec O’Meara.

Mass Save offers programs for single-family homes, renters, and new construction homes. Some of the most popular programs include appliance recycling, heating and cooling upgrades, home energy assessments, and improvements to insulation and windows.

Kevin Parse, who manages Mass Save energy efficiency programs for Unitil, explains that an inefficient, working refrigerator or freezer uses electricity unnecessarily. Working units qualify for a no-cost pickup and removal, plus a $75 rebate. Mass Save vendors will also responsibly recycle these units.

This summer, Mass Save is also offering $40 rebates for ENERGY STAR-certified room air conditioners, which use, on average, $75 less electricity annually.

Every home is eligible for a no-cost home energy assessment, which provides personalized recommendations and access to discounts on eligible upgrades, such as weatherization, insulation, and air sealing.

“Air sealing and insulation upgrades are one of the most cost-effective ways to boost efficiency and save money,” said Parse. “Qualified projects can receive between 75 and 100 percent off approved insulation and air sealing improvements.”

O’Meara emphasized that Mass Save’s variety of offerings means nearly every household can find a program tailored to help them save energy, cut costs, and stay comfortable.
