TerrorBots, a robotics team representing the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, will compete in district competitions during March in Springfield.

“Ours is quite the eclectic team,” said Donata Martin, BGCFL executive director. “This program is made possible by all our partners—local schools and businesses that provide mentors—as well as the financial sponsorship from Unitil.”

According to Martin, team members learn more about math and science, engineering and design skills while expanding their knowledge of careers involving engineering, computer programming, business, public speaking, communication and leadership skills.

TerrorBots includes students from Leominster and Fitchburg schools who attend the club, students of Fitchburg High, Leominster High and Montachusett Regional Vocational School, Leominster Center for Excellence and Innovation (CETI) and the Sizer Charter School.

The team of 25 students in grades 8 to 12 has six weeks to design, build, program and test a 120-pound robot from a common kit of parts provided by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Noted inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people.

This year’s challenge is called the RECYCLE RUSH,SM which is a recycling-themed game played by two alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter.

The team will compete in district competitions in March at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, and Bryant University, Smithfield, Rhode Island, with the goal of qualifying for the 2015 FIRST Championship in April in St. Louis, Missouri.

Mentors and coaches are from the following organizations: Bio-Techne, Comcast, Steel-Fab, teachers from Leominster Center for Excellence and Innovation, local skilled tradesman, Boys & Girls Club staff, and FIRST® Robotics Competition ( FRC) alumni, now students at Mount Wachusett Community College and Fitchburg State University.
