Fifth-grade students from area schools recently had the opportunity to test their science knowledge, thanks to a hands-on review by Unitil educational consultant Neil Clark, who has been teaching the annual class for eight years.

“This is a terrific review since we covered the material last fall. It is a great refresher for the students,” said Tina Ross, a fifth-grade teacher at Hawthorne Brook Middle School.

“The students get to review what they learned last year, which is very helpful and beneficial,” said Dawn Doyle, a fifth-grade teacher at T.C. Passios Elementary School.

Working in small groups, students create open and closed circuits using batteries, wires and flashlight bulbs. New this year, students learned how an electromagnet works, using a simple bolt, wire and small battery.

In addition to reviewing the science of electricity with the students, Clark also discussed electric safety, including what to do when they see downed wires, who to call and how to protect younger children from the potential hazard.

Unitil developed the classroom program in 2004, to help students improve their scores on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) science test.

Clark will teach more than 25 classes in four communities this year.

As well as Townsend students, fifth-grade students from Lunenburg’s T.C. Passios Elementary School, Ashby Elementary, Fitchburg’s Memorial Middle, Arthur M. Longsjo Jr. Middle and Fitchburg Arts Academy have participated in the program. A photo gallery (below) showcases various classroom exercises.

Massachusetts requires that students be tested and meet certain minimum requirements because of the Education Reform Law of 1993.

Unitil provides electric service to Ashby, Fitchburg, Lunenburg and Townsend, and natural gas service to those communities, as well as Gardner and Westminster.
