If you want a passionate discussion, just ask someone about compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs). In anticipation of the old-fashioned incandescent bulbs being phased out, some folks are hoarding the lightbulb invented by Thomas Edison.

The first to go this year was the 100-watt, with the 75-watt bulb going away January 2013 and, in 2014, the 40-watt and 60-watt bulbs.

Before you rush out to stockpile 75-watt bulbs, take another look at CFLs. They have come a long way since they were first introduced. With improved technology, ENERGY STAR-qualified CFLs provide warm and inviting light.

Choosing the Right CFL

CFLs are available in a variety of decorative styles and shapes. A number of CFLs are now available for use in 3-way, dimmable and outdoor applications. In addition, they come in a different choice of shades: yellowish, bright white, or a bluish shade.

For a whiter light, look for bulbs marked 3000-4100K, or “Cool White. These bulbs are good for kitchens and work stations. For a bluer light, look for bulbs marked 5000-6500K, or “Natural” or “Daylight.” These bulbs are ideal for reading.

To help you make the right decision, starting this year, the Federal Trade Commission requires all standard medium screw-based lightbulbs to include a new label on the package.  These labels allow customers to compare products on a variety of features, regardless of the manufacturer or technology.

Even Thomas Edison would be hard pressed to stay with incandescent bulbs today, with CFLs providing excellent lighting and saving the average user $50 in energy costs over each bulb's lifetime.
