“Heating Degree Days,” or HDD for short, are a measurement used to quantify how cold it is outside on a given day. HDD are used within the energy industry to estimate how hard a furnace needs to work to keep your home or business warm. The colder it is outside, the higher the number of HDD. As temperatures drop and HDD increase, more energy is needed to compensate and maintain a comfortable temperature inside buildings.

Heating Degree Days are the number of degrees that a day's average temperature is below 65 degrees Fahrenheit, which is approximately the temperature below which buildings need to be heated. For example, if the day’s average temperature outside was 35 degrees, that day equaled 30 Heating Degree Days, as 65 minus 35 is 30.

Cooling Degree Days are the summertime version of Heating Degree Days. While Heating Degree Days quantify how cold it is outside, Cooling Degree Days quantify how warm it is outside and are used to estimate how much energy your air conditioner may need to expend to maintain a comfortable temperature inside.
