Fitchburg Solarway

Solarway, Fitchburg, MA

A passway to a greener future

With modern technology and a renewable energy source, we can continue our effort to bring reliable and sustainable electricity to Fitchburg. This project represents the stewardship that Unitil hopes to continue and encourage for its customers in the surrounding areas.

Solarway is a 1.3-megawatt solar array built on land once occupied by a power plant burning traditional fossil fuels. Unlike the site’s previous footprint, this land will now be used to produce renewable and sustainable energy that can be relied on for generations to come. The project is another step toward the Commonwealth’s goal to ensure clean, sustainable energy for the region well into this century.

In total, Solarway’s 3,708 panels hold 533,952 cells producing solar power that provides energy to the towns we serve. Like the members of a community, each cell does its part to contribute to the productivity and efficiency of the whole. With the average annual electricity consumption by residential utility customers at 10,766 kilowatt-hours (kWh), Solarway’s 1.3-megawatt production can power a neighborhood. Each year, Solarway can independently power 144 homes

The entire Solarway site occupies more than 15 acres. Since the 1850s, this site has produced energy for the people of Fitchburg. After all this time, the solar array is the modern version of what was the true historical use of the land: generating energy for the city.
