The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides money to help low-income homeowners and renters pay for heating costs. The amount of assistance customers receive from LIHEAP is based on household size and income, energy costs, and other factors.
If your heat is included in your rent, you may still apply for LIHEAP. Click here for income guidelines.
This discount amount currently varies across our Maine service territory. To find your discount, visit our Rate Page and refer to the name in parentheses at the top of the table.
Northern Utility Customers
Once your LIHEAP application is approved, you will receive a 30% discount on your gas service. The discount rate is not retroactive but effective for the next twelve (12) months.
Bangor Gas Company Customers
If you are a Bangor-area customer receiving the residential rate, you may be eligible to receive a 28% discount on your transportation rate. This discount applies to any customers identified by the Maine State Housing Authority as eligible for LIHEAP. Once enrolled, customers will receive the discount for as long as they are LIHEAP eligible.
