Unitil, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, announced today that the Wells-Ogunquit Consolidated School District (WOCSD) has elected to convert all three of its schools to natural gas.

"As the cost of education increases, we are continuously looking for ways to operate our schools more efficiently,” said Jim Daly, WOCSD superintendent. “Converting to natural gas provides a substantial cost savings and allows us to update our facilities for greater reliability and efficiency."

Unitil is installing  6,600 feet of six-inch, high-density plastic gas main along Route 109 (Sanford Road) and across school property to connect the elementary, junior high and high schools. The project involves the installation of gas line over the nearby railroad tracks to connect the new extension to Unitil's main line.

"Natural gas provides an  affordable, more efficient option for schools, businesses and homeowners," said Mike Smith, Manager, Business Services with Unitil. "Unitil is proud to help the Wells-Ogunquit School District save with natural gas."

WOCSD estimates it will save 20 percent on energy costs by making the switch to natural gas. As part of the project, two new natural gas boilers are being installed at the junior high school and the boiler is being converted to natural gas at the elementary school. All kitchen appliances at the junior high and elementary schools are being converted to natural gas. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of August with all three facilities powered by the start of the school year.

Natural gas is a safe, economical energy source that is better for the environment and less expensive than oil. Customers and businesses interested in switching to natural gas should visit www.unitil.com/switch and use the "Gas Availability Tool" to learn if they might be eligible.
