Unitil, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England is entering the next phase of its System Upgrade for Reliable Energy (SURE) project and is beginning work in Portland’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood. The Unitil SURE project, a 14-year project now in year four, is modernizing the Portland area's gas infrastructure, making it more reliable and better able to meet the growing demand for natural gas in Maine.

NEUCO, the contractor for Unitil’s SURE project, will begin replacement of the gas mains and service lines throughout the Munjoy Hill neighborhood starting April 14, with construction expected to last through mid-June. To learn more about the SURE project and its impact on the Munjoy Hill neighborhood, local residents are invited to attend a special informational meeting on April 7 at 7p.m. at the East End Community School, 195 North Street, Portland.

“We are committed to minimizing disruptions to local residents and businesses as we upgrade the energy infrastructure on Munjoy Hill over the next few months,” said Matt Doughty, SURE Project manager, Unitil. “Safety is our first priority, but we will work quickly and efficiently to complete our work with as little inconvenience as possible to neighborhood residents.”

Due to the construction work on Munjoy Hill, Unitil will be able to offer natural gas service to new customers who live near the existing pipeline. Residents and businesses in the neighborhood who are interested in switching to natural gas should call Unitil today at 1-888-4-UNITIL, or fill out an online form.

Unitil completed SURE project construction and excavation work in downtown Portland and Westbrook on schedule last year. In 2013, Unitil replaced more than seven miles of cast iron pipe with state-of-the art, high-density plastic pipe, assuring that downtown Portland and Westbrook have natural gas infrastructure equipped to meet the growing gas needs of the local economy. In three years, Unitil has completed 28 percent of the SURE project, including all planned work in Westbrook. Unitil has upgraded more than 11 miles of pipe in the region and installing more than 17 miles of plastic pipe in total.
