Unitil Corporation, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers throughout New England, is proud to announce the first ever recipients of the Unitil Scholarship. The new fund was created to support students who demonstrate outstanding potential for careers in engineering, math or science. Five high school seniors from the company’s service territories in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts pursuing degrees in these areas will each receive $5,000 for the first year of undergraduate study.
These students are:
- Annee Doyle of Sanbornville, New Hampshire, a graduate of Spaulding High School. Annee will be attending the attending the University of Oklahoma this fall to study physics and chemistry.
- Alex Fortier of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, a graduate of Narragansett Regional High School. Alex will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute to study computer engineering.
- Zacharie Dugas of Deerfield, New Hampshire, a graduate of Concord High School. Zacharie will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he will study engineering.
- Kelsey Maguire of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, a graduate of Cape Elizabeth High School. Kelsey will be attending Bowdoin College to study either biology or chemistry.
- Andrew Caunter of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, a graduate of Winnicunnet High School. Andrew will be attending Northeastern University in the fall to study engineering.
Also as part of the program, a sixth student who is a child of a Unitil employee was also awarded a scholarship. Quinn Connerof Newfields, New Hampshire, a graduate of Exeter High School, was selected to receive this unique award. Quinn will be attending the Stevens Institute of Technology to study chemical and environmental engineering.
Each of the students was selected by a committee of Unitil employees local to their specific region. Upon receipt of registration in a degree program with a declared major or concentration in engineering, math or science, Unitil will issue a $2,500 check on the student’s behalf for the fall term. The remaining balance will be paid prior to the start of the spring semester.
“This scholarship is part of Unitil’s ongoing work to promote careers in math, science and engineering among our local students,” Unitil Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs Carol Valianti said. “We need our country’s brightest minds focused on the technological challenges of the future, and we hope this scholarship makes a meaningful impact on the educational career of these students.”
The Unitil Scholarship Fund joins the existing Unitil Energy Systems, Inc. Scholarship Program, which supports students from the Exeter Area, Sanborn Regional, Timberlane Regional and Winnacunnet high schools, as well as the Peter J. Stulgis Scholarship Fund for students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, NH. More information on the Unitil Scholarship Fund can be found at www.unitil.com.
