Unitil Partners With Revision Energy, Eguana On Energy Storage Pilot

Study designed to look at how battery storage can impact peak demand times
Hampton, NH

HAMPTON, NH - Unitil, a local provider of natural gas and electricity, is pleased to report that initial results from a summer-long battery storage pilot in Massachusetts are promising and suggest a number of beneficial integration opportunities for customers in years to come.

Earlier this spring, Unitil installed four energy storage systems at residential customer-owned properties with net metered solar PV generation facilities. Unitil worked with New England solar installer Revision Energy and Eguana Technologies, a Canadian company that focuses on battery storage technologies.

We are thrilled with the preliminary results of our pilot. The data collected here will aid us as we continue to work with local regulators to find the best ways to integrate renewable energy and battery storage into New England’s grid in a way that keeps energy reliable and affordable. Revision and Eguana have been outstanding partners both in helping to make this program a reality and in working directly with our customers to ensure a positive experience.

The 5 kW/13 kWh battery systems which were installed on customer facilities are designed to operate remotely and in aggregate to release energy as solar PV generation lowers and the New England grid demand spikes late in the afternoon/early evening on the hottest summer days. By releasing energy in a timely manner, the system aims to making more renewable energy available at the times of day when customers need it the most. The storage systems were also designed to serve as backup power during outages, lowering the impact of interruptions.

Initial results show the installed controls released stored energy right on time, helping to ease demand as hoped.

“ReVision Energy was thrilled to work with Unitil and Eguana on this exciting demonstration project,” ReVision co-founder Fortunant Mueller said. “We look forward to working with residential and commercial customers together with Unitil to continue to identify opportunities for cost effective solar-plus-storage systems to meet their clean energy needs.”

“We are pleased that our technology platform has been selected for this important pilot project which is illustrating the advantages of integrating distributed solar energy and battery storage assets.” Livio Filice, Director of Sales at Eguana Technologies said.  “Eguana’s participation in this next-generation utility pilot project marks the company’s successful entrance into the Northeast utility market.”
