Over 200 Boys & Girls Club members had the opportunity to learn about career opportunities at a ‘Touch-A-Truck’ event the club hosted last week.
“What is great about an event like this is that the kids are exposed to a variety of career opportunities, which may help with career decisions in the future,” said Donata Martin, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster.
Unitil, Comcast, MedStar and the City of Leominster’s Fire Department all participated in the event that was hosted at the Boys & Girls Club on Lindell Ave.
The club, with children ages 5 to 18, were able to learn what a utility lineman, firefighter, cable installer and EMT job responsibilities included.
According to Martin, the kids were genuinely interested in interacting with the equipment and learning more about the various career opportunities. “The reason for the event is that we want to show the kids that not everyone needs to go to college to secure a good paying career, but you still need to do well in school, for some careers math and science, to qualify for these positions.”
Unitil, who initiated the idea, has hosted similar events in the past. “We find it is a great way to educate young people on various career opportunities,” said Alec O’Meara, media relations manager for Unitil.
Martin said the event was so well received that it plans on holding an event next year with additional professions represented.
