In an effort to help support local charities focusing on homelessness and food insecurity, Unitil, a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers throughout New England, has donated $13,000 as part of its giving program, nearly $700 of which was donated by employees. Unitil employees also gifted toys to children in need throughout its service territories.
Together, Unitil donated to the following non-profit organizations throughout New England:
- The Friendly Kitchen, Concord, NH
- Concord Coalition for Homelessness, Concord, NH
- Meals on Wheels of Rockingham County, NH Seacoast region
- Society of St. Paul de Vincent, Exeter, NH Seacoast region
- Montachusett Opportunity Council, Fitchburg, MA
- Salvation Army, Fitchburg, MA
- Wayside Food Programs, Portland, ME
- Preble Street, Portland, ME
- Meals on Wheels of Strafford County, Portsmouth, NH territories
- CrossRoads House, Portsmouth, NH
"Every dollar provides two meals for someone in need. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one in seven adults/children in New Hampshire are food insecure, meaning they do not know when or where their next meal is coming from. We can’t thank Unitil enough for their generosity."
Sarah Tremblay, Senior Director, Development United Way of the Greater Seacoast
According to Tremblay, a $100 donation typically provides two weeks of case management support to help one individual move out of homelessness. In New Hampshire, 44 percent of all renters are cost-burdened, paying more than 30 percent of their income on rent, and half of those are spending more than 50 percent.
In addition, toys were collected and shipped directly to organizations in need including Seacoast Area Firefighters Toy Bank and Team Thiago. Altogether, Unitil donated over $250,000 in 2020 as part of COVID-19 relief efforts in support of community outreach efforts.
“I’m proud of our organization for coming together virtually to lend a hand, especially our employees that contributed personally to help those in need,” said Unitil Media Relations Manager, Alec O’Meara. “We continue to encourage everyone to spread joy by providing random acts of kindness. Often free in nature, a simple act goes a long way.”
