Electric vehicle owners now have increased charging options thanks to Unitil’s initiative to assist local organizations in installing EV chargers in the Fitchburg area.
Over the past eight months, three EV charging projects, each with four charging ports, have been installed in the city. Each port allows four EVs to charge simultaneously. Through its MA EV Ready2Charge program, Unitil provides financial incentives to help offset the upfront costs of installation, making it more affordable for businesses and municipalities.
“It really makes a difference to provide rebates for electrical upgrades, helping it become more economical for organizations to install EV chargers as the region proactively builds a robust network of charging stations,” said Amanda Vicinanzo, Unitil’s external affairs manager.

Most recently, a Level 2 charging station was installed at the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce on South Street. Similar installations have taken place at Monty Tech and Fitchburg State University, which is also in discussions to add more chargers. Additionally, the town hall in Ashby will soon have EV chargers.
Many electric vehicle owners rely on Level 1 charging at home, which can take 40 hours or more to fully charge a long-range battery. In contrast, a Level 2 charger can take 4 to 10 hours, while a Level 3 charger (also known as a DC Fast Charge) can charge a battery to 80 percent in just 20 to 60 minutes.
“Establishing a comprehensive regional network of EV charging stations is essential for reducing carbon emissions and enhancing access to electric vehicles. We are pleased to have provided technical assistance and financial support through rebates,” Vicinanzo stated.
