Unitil (www.unitil.com), a natural gas and electric delivery company with residential and business customers throughout New England, today announces it will award a total of $25,000 annually to students who demonstrate outstanding potential for careers in engineering, math or science through the new Unitil Scholarship Fund. Five high school seniors from the company’s service territories in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts who are pursuing degrees in these areas will each receive $5,000 for the first year of undergraduate study.

“The level of skill and expertise necessary for the engineering, math and science fields is in high in demand in today’s workforce,” said Kevin Sprague, Unitil’s director of engineering. “Many Unitil employees are local residents hired for their superior talent in these areas. Through the Scholarship Fund, we hope to continue to foster such expertise in our communities.”

Unitil Scholarship Fund application packets for the 2011-2012 academic year will be available Friday, March 11th, in the guidance department of select high schools throughout the utility’s service territories in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts as well as on the website. The deadline to submit completed applications is on or before April 15 and recipients will be notified of selection by mail no later than May 30.

The Unitil Scholarship Committee will review all applications and select recipients based on academic merit, extracurricular activities, need and additional financial support received, among other criteria. One alternate will be chosen for each scholarship in the event that an award is declined or the winner becomes ineligible. Upon receipt of registration in a degree program with a declared major or concentration in engineering, math or science, Unitil will issue a $2,500 check directly to the college or university on the student’s behalf for the fall term. The remaining balance will be paid prior to the start of the spring semester. For more information please visit www.unitil.com/our-community.

The new Scholarship Fund joins the existing Unitil Energy Systems, Inc. Scholarship Program, which supports students from the Exeter Area, Sanborn Regional, TImberlane Regional and Winnacunnet high schools, as well as the Peter J. Stulgis Scholarship Fund for students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, NH.

“Unitil is constantly searching for opportunities to help support a local student’s dreams for a future in the fields of math and science,” Carol Valianti, vice president of communications and public affairs at Unitil, said. “Our new scholarship represents one such opportunity, and an investment into the education of our brightest young minds benefits us all.”
