Unitil Corporation, (unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, has restored power to the majority of customers impacted by yesterday’s heavy winds from Tropical Storm Isaias.
"Overnight crews made significant progress restoring power while working with first responders to address wires down and other public safety issues."
Alec O'Meara, Media Relations Manager
As of 6:00 AM, approximately 90 Unitil customers are without power, down from a peak of 7,700 on Tuesday evening. Strong wind gusts were reported overnight as Isaias passed to the west of the service territory. As with most tropical cyclones traveling from south to north, the heaviest rains were seen to the west of the storm’s track, while the strongest winds were seen to the east.
Downed trees and limbs and broken poles were some of the troubles crews faced in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias. Unitil secured additional crews in advance of the storm and opened its system Emergency Operations Center Tuesday morning to coordinate restoration efforts.
“Overnight crews made significant progress restoring power while working with first responders to address wires down and other public safety issues. While the majority of our customers’ power has been restored the potential exists for what is called “nested” outages, or outages still impacting individual homes after the rest of a street is restored. If you are still without power but the rest of your street has power, we recommend calling Unitil customer service to make sure your individual outage is reported," said Media Relations Manager, Alec O'Meara.
Unitil will be communicating throughout the event through Public Service Announcements (PSAs), our website, our customer call center and through the media. We also encourage customers to follow along with our storm updates via Facebook, our Twitter feed (@Unitil) and we will be providing real-time outage information online at unitil.com/map.
