Many residents don't give their electric company much thought — until the lights start to flicker. For Bob Schoenberger, president and chief executive officer of Unitil Corp., keeping the power on during a disaster poses a supreme test.
Schoenberger, 62, has run Unitil since 1997.
The Hampton-based public utility holding company, which delivers natural gas and electricity in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts, has about 400 employees.
Question: What was your first job?
Schoenberger: A truck driver's assistant in Manhattan's garment district. I loaded and unloaded bolts of material for three summers. After college, I worked for Gov. Hugh Carey as deputy assistant for economic policy. In 1974, we faced a fiscal crisis. There were days you'd go home and say, "New York City may not make it."
