Unitil, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, today christened its new Portland facility at 376 Riverside Industrial Parkway with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The company moved its Maine natural gas operations from Forest Avenue as it continues to experience business growth throughout the state.
"Unitil is proud to be the largest provider of natural gas in the state of Maine and we are committed to meeting growing demand," said Alec O’Meara, Unitil Media Relations Manager. "This new facility will allow our team to continue to serve our customers with the quality we've become known for, while also modernizing our infrastructure future growth."
Unitil has grown its customer base in the state by 2-3 percent annually since purchasing Northern Utilities in 2008 and expects to continue to outpace national growth benchmarks as more and more Maine residents explore heating alternatives. Since 2008, Unitil has increased staff at its Unitil Portland location by approximately 35 percent.
The increased square footage and modern facilities are an integral part of Unitil's efforts to improve underground gas line infrastructure in the Portland area, including its 14-year long project to replace and upgrade gas line in the SURE project.
Unitil was joined by Senator Justin Alfond, Senator Anne Haskell, Representative Mark Dion, Jeff Marks, Executive Director E2 Technology - Environmental & Energy Technology Council of Maine, Dajuan Eubanks, Maine Red Claws President and David Brenerman, Portland City Councilor District 5 at the ceremony.
