Unitil, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, worked with Townsend officials to reduce their annual streetlight energy consumption by over fifty percent.

In 2018 Unitil joined with the selectmen and the town’s energy committee to convert 109 streetlights to energy efficient fixtures as part of the community’s adoption of the Green Communities Act, which requires implementing energy efficiency measures.

"The town reduced their streetlight energy usage, based on 12 months of 2019, by 17,105 kWh, or 53 percent when compared to 2018."

Alec O'Meara, Media Relations Manager for Unitil

Unitil periodically revisits their energy efficiency projects to see if they are realizing the estimated energy savings.

"We are on track and the good news is that the town reduced their streetlight energy usage, based on 12 months of 2019, by 17,105 kWh, or 53 percent when compared to 2018. This is a significant savings; it represents the annual energy usage of over two homes," said O’Meara

The town saved $7,538 in energy cost for the year.
