The North Middlesex Regional School District will likely save nearly $100,000 in energy costs after joining forces with Unitil in a school-lighting project.

John DiNapoli, the municipal and community services manager for Unitil, said he reached out to the administration in the district a couple years ago to introduce the district to the various cost-saving programs out there.

"There are programs out there for rebates," DiNapoli said. He said the administration was interested in doing something with lighting in many of their school buildings, including the high school, Spaulding School, Hawthorne Brook and Squannacook, all in Townsend.

An energy audit was done, and the administration in the district agreed to bring in ERS Electric Services, an electric contractor out of Ashby, to replace light bulbs in the four facilities.

"By doing that, the school system will save about $94,000 by putting in new energy-efficient light bulbs," DiNapoli said.
