Unitil Corporation, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers throughout New England, has given North Middlesex Regional High School nearly $193,000 in an energy efficiency rebate.

The newly built 180,000 square-foot-building has LED lighting, high efficiency heating and cooling equipment, energy recovery ventilation and increased roof insulation, which qualified for a $192,241 rebate toward the more efficient equipment.

Because of the super efficiency of the equipment, the building will be more comfortable for the students, while reducing our energy usage.

Superintendent for North Middlesex Regional Schools, Joan Landers

Because of the building's efficiency, it is going through the process for LEED recognition (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the most widely used green building rating system in the world.

Since it was a new building, Unitil engineers modeled different energy systems, to calculate the annual savings versus using less-efficient equipment. Over the lifetime of the energy efficiency upgrades, approximately 15 years for heating and cooling equipment, it is anticipated the school will save 549,600 therms of natural gas, and over 6 million kWh of electricity over a 13 year period, which translates into approximately $1.6 million in savings, based on today’s rates.

Oscar Hills, facility director for the school, said that Unitil was great to work with through the entire process.  “I can’t say enough about working with Unitil, they were great and helped us through the entire process.”
