Unitil, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, announced today the completion of an energy performance contract at the Meldrim Thomson State Office Complex, 31 Hazen Drive in Concord. This state-of-the-art facility will result in savings of approximately $950,000 annually, representing a 54,813,000 kBtu/year in fossil fuel reduction. This annual reduction lowers CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by more than 12 million pounds—equivalent to taking 1,052 cars off the road annually.
“The entire project is being paid from annual energy savings totaling $950,000 without the need for any capital expenditure by the State," said Mike Connor, Commissioner of the NH Department of Administrative Services. "In addition, we were also able to take advantage of energy rebates and a sustainable energy grant to complete additional energy saving initiatives and install solar panels at the DMV building.”
The project is part of a comprehensive energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrade of facilities financed in partnership with ConEdison Solutions, a leading renewable energy and sustainability firm. The campus buildings are comprised of a number of highly secure and critical operations facilities, including the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services; the Division of Motor Vehicles; the Department of Safety (including the State Police); and the Department of Transportation.
"This project will benefit the entire state of New Hampshire," said Alec O’Meara, Unitil Media Relations Manager. "We all want to see the State make efficient use of the revenue it collects, and decreasing spending on energy helps assure that more is available for the important programs provided.”
“It has been an honor to work with Unitil and the New Hampshire State Department on this pioneering and far-reaching energy efficiency initiative,” said Michael W. Gibson, Vice President of ConEdison Solutions. “As a leading renewable energy company in the region, we recognize the significance of projects like this. New Hampshire is a state where policy makers understand the vastly important benefits of clean energy, and this comprehensive project further solidifies the state’s role as a national leader in the advancement of renewable energy.”
The scope of the project includes more than 60 energy efficiency and infrastructure upgrade projects, including a new 8.3 MMBtu biomass boiler system and chip storage building, as well as high-efficiency lighting, controls, fans, transformer upgrades and water conservation measures. As a result, the project will be paid for by the guaranteed savings over the next 18 years.
