Unitil Corporation, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers throughout New England, celebrated the removal of the last length of cast iron pipe from its gas system in New Hampshire today.

The final cast Iron pipe was cut out of the system near the intersection of Islington and Bartlett Street in Portsmouth. The last of Unitil’s bare steel in the state was removed from the system in November. Over the last nine years, Unitil has upgraded 41.24 miles of bare steel and 11.3 miles of cast iron in New Hampshire, replacing the pipes with high density plastic piping.

"The completion of this project will assure that our region has the type of modern infrastructure that facilitates economic growth. Unitil is committed to providing safe, reliable service to its customers, and we understand that when the region we serve sees growth, we all benefit together."

Unitil Media Relations Manager, Alec O'Meara

Unitil cast iron and bare steel programs remain ongoing in Unitil’s Maine and Massachusetts service territories. New England Utility Constructors Incorporated (NEUCO) has assisted Unitil with its pipe replacement efforts in the state.

Unitil received the Northeast Gas Association’s 2017 Health and Safety Award for its gas operations, including the use of GPS-based tracking on new pipeline assets in order to help manage the system.

“With the last of the old out of the ground and our innovative ‘smart pipe’ system getting recognized by peers, Unitil’s focus remains on the future and finding new ways to better serve our customers,” O’Meara said.
