Fitchburg Public Schools have struck a deal with Unitil that will replace nearly all of the district's old lighting fixtures and bulbs with more energy-efficient ones, with the district paying only a fraction of the cost and reaping significant savings over several years, according to school officials.
Business Manager Robert Jokela said the total cost of the project is about $423,000, and the district's contribution will be about $127,000, which will come out of school-choice funds.
"We're glad that we're able to participate in this program," Jokela said. "It helps make us more efficient in our energy and utilities budget, and it will have long-standing savings for many years."
Unitil will reimburse 70 percent of the cost, the funds coming as an energy-efficiency rebate from the "EE" charge customers see on their bills, Unitil Vice President of Communications Carol Valianti said.
