NOTE: Incentive and rebate availability is determined by location and utility service type and is subject to change based on evolving state regulations
Energy efficiency upgrades run the gamut from a 50-cent foam gasket cover for stopping sneaky drafts around electrical outlets to a $30,000 investment in a geothermal heat pump to tap into the heat energy just below the earth’s surface. But upgrades don’t have to break the bank in order for you to reap the rewards. Here are some ways to upgrade your home’s efficiency on a budget.
Appliances
Look for the ENERGY STAR® symbol when it’s time to replace appliances, whether it’s a portable air-conditioning unit or a washing machine. Mail-in rebates through MassSave.com® and NHSaves.com® will save you money up front, and your investment will pay off in the long run by lowering your monthly energy bill.
Insulation & Weatherization
One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable and efficient is to stop air leaks and ensure you have proper insulation. Common culprits for energy loss include gaps around windows and doors, attic hatches, and where pipes or wires enter your home. Using simple materials like caulk and weatherstripping can make a significant difference.
For larger projects, a professional home energy assessment can pinpoint your home’s biggest opportunities for savings. Many states offer programs to help you get started.
New Hampshire
Through NHSaves, Unitil offers New Hampshire customers Home Energy Performance – a whole-house audit and weatherization program. Participants will receive a comprehensive assessment of their home, and may be eligible for a 75% rebate (up to $6,000) on the recommended energy efficiency improvements. Plus, Unitil offers 0% on-bill financing up to $7,500. Visit NHSaves.com to see if your home qualifies.
Unitil also offers the Home Energy Assistance program to income-eligible homeowners and renters in New Hampshire to optimize home energy performance and make homes safer and more comfortable. This program covers 100% of the cost to weatherize the homes of income-eligible customers. Income-eligibility is determined by the total household income and the number of people in your household. Massachusetts
Massachusetts customers can take advantage of a Home Energy Assessment, where an Energy Specialist will identify energy-saving opportunities, recommend upgrades and help navigate available rebates and incentives. You may also qualify for no-cost targeted air sealing of leaks in drafty areas of your home, 75% off approved insulation improvements, and 0% HEAT Loan financing for eligible system upgrades. Hot Water & Heating
Your water heater and heating system are two of the largest energy users in your home. For a no-cost way to save, consider lowering your water heater’s thermostat to 120°F. Additionally, installing a programmable or smart thermostat allows you to automatically adjust your home's temperature, saving energy while you're asleep or away. When it's time to upgrade your furnace or boiler, always look for high-efficiency models.
Natural gas customers in New Hampshire can save hundreds of dollars on heating equipment that meets or exceeds certain efficiency ratings. Rebates on qualified heating system upgrades are as high as $1,500. Apply online, or contact Resource Innovations at NHRebates@resource-innovations.com or 1-888-855-0285 for more information.
Installing a smart thermostat can save natural gas customers in New Hampshire up to $85 and Massachusetts residents up to $100. Look for the ENERGY STAR-certified models for maximum rebates. Please note that electric customers in New Hampshire and customers with electric resistance heating in Massachusetts are not eligible for this rebate. Visit the NHSaves Online Marketplace or the Mass Save Online Marketplace to find deals on smart thermostats.
