Your electric meter is getting an upgrade!

Installations will begin this winter in Massachusetts and continue through 2025. You’ll receive a mailing in advance and an email (if your email address is on file and you have not previously unsubscribed) and a phone call closer to the installation date. In most cases, no appointment is required and installation should take only minutes to complete.

New Hampshire installations will begin in 2026.

We are working with Utility Partners of America (UPA) to roll out these new meters. You’ll receive a letter in advance and a phone call closer to the installation date from them on our behalf.

The UPA technician will be clearly identified with badges and branded vehicles. Before beginning work, they will knock on your door and leave a door hanger once the job is done.

Exceptions:

Unitil crews will perform the upgrades of a select group of unique meters. If your service includes one of these meters, you will receive communications directly from Unitil.

Not usually! As long as your meter is accessible from the street, technicians will be able to upgrade your meter without your assistance.

We ask you to create a 3-foot clearance around your meter - free of obstructions or debris - to ensure the technicians' safety.

No, the new meter operates on a separate network, just like your current one, so no internet connection is needed. However, to take advantage of the new features possible with this meter in the future, you would need a home network at that time. 

These meters use radio frequency (RF) emissions to relay information. Levels are well below the levels emitted by common household devices like cell phones, TVs, baby monitors, and microwaves. For more information, visit the FCC website.

Absolutely. Your new meter securely and wirelessly transmits energy usage data to Unitil. This data helps ensure accurate billing and provides insights to help you manage your usage. Rest assured, the meter doesn't collect or store personally-identifiable information. All data is encrypted and protected by U.S. government-approved standards, and our meters comply with the latest cybersecurity guidelines from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

There will be a brief interruption of service—just a few minutes—during installation. We apologize for any inconvenience.

In 2006, Unitil introduced advanced networked (AMI) electric meters, leading the region in replacing traditional analog ones. These meters enabled us to remotely read your meter on a daily basis. However, technology evolves quickly, and it is again time for an upgrade.

Customers in Massachusetts have the option to choose a non-communicating meter. Selecting this option will require manual monthly readings by a utility representative, which will incur a monthly reading fee. UPA (Utility Partners of America) is the company that is responsible for changing out your existing meter. There are various reasons to contact them directly.
