Massachusetts Rate Relief for Residential Customers

The majority of this rate reduction will be accomplished through the $180 million in funding from the Healey-Driscoll Administration. The remainder of the rate reduction will be accomplished by deferring a portion of costs and spreading out recovery over a longer period of time.

The rate adjustments take effect for usage starting on February 1. Depending on when your meter is read, your February bill may contain some usage at January’s rate and some usage at the reduced February rate.  The lower rates will also be reflected in your March bill (for remaining February usage and March usage) and your April bill (for remaining March usage).

Customers should be aware that bills usually decline in March and April as weather warms up and electricity usage decreases. Therefore, customers may benefit both from reduced usage and from the rate reduction.

The savings you see on your bill will not be reflected as a separate credit or line item. The reduction is reflected in the Customer Charge and the Distribution Charge, which are line items in the Delivery Charges portion of your electric bill. These charges will be reduced beginning on February 1 to result in an overall bill reduction of 25%.

The amount of your bill depends on your usage, so we can’t provide a specific dollar figure for what any individual customer will save. However, the rate changes will provide a reduction of 25% on the average residential bill, or $59.20 for a typical residential customer on Default Service with average monthly usage (540 kWh).
