Yeseidi Gutierrez and Nicole Yunes Perez beamed when they were able to complete the circuit on a small battery-powered light Wednesday. "We're so excited," said Yeseidi, 11. They were taking part in a class on electricity and magnetism put on by Unitil to prepare fifth-graders for the upcoming MCAS exams May 18 and May 19.

Neil Clark, a consultant from The Writing Co., met with students at Fitchburg Arts Academy Wednesday. He's also meeting with fifth-graders from throughout the city, Lunenburg, Ashby and Townsend for the Guided Learning Program. "The reason Unitil launched this initiative is that we want to support the teachers' efforts to improve math and science scores," said Unitil spokesman Bill White. "We all win when students do well in school. The feedback from the teachers and students is that they really like the hands-on learning that takes place. "

It is the second year Clark visited the school, said math and life sciences teacher Kelly Spagnuolo. Clark's lesson reinforces lessons taught in the school and provides hands-on experience with the lights and magnets, she said. Clark spoke to the students about items in their homes that use electricity and about energy efficiency.
