Third-grade students at Marston School spent Monday morning digging in the dirt in celebration of Arbor Day.

And the school now has a new American elm tree near the bus loop behind the school, courtesy of Unitil."

Hopefully the kids learned more about the importance of planting trees," said Unitil system arborist Sara Sankowich. "They talked about the 12 things that trees give us, and that helps them realize how important trees are to our everyday life."

..."I didn't know trees gave us so many things, that was cool," said third-grade student Jonathan Mang. "I'd like to plant an oak tree in my yard because I love squirrels, but my mom and dad don't like the squirrel holes."

This was the first year for the Arbor Day celebration, put together by Sankowich and Marston third-grade teacher Jason Schrack.

"Unitil contacted us about it," Schrack said. "We do a plant and trees unit, so we thought it would work well with our curriculum. They study plants and trees for about a month and a half in the fall, and we revisit it in the spring. They do plant some peas and other quick growing plants to learn about the life cycle."

Sankowich invited students to help plant the tree, covering it with dirt and mulch, as well as watering it...
