Unitil on track to be cast-iron and bare steel free in Maine by 2024
November 18, 2019
Portland, ME

Unitil (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, has completed year nine of its comprehensive 14-year System Upgrade for Reliable Energy (SURE) project as part of its ongoing effort to modernize the Portland area’s natural gas infrastructure. Since the project’s inception in 2011, Unitil has completed approximately 60% of the initiative, upgrading over 4,500 service lines and tending to 9,400 meters.

This year’s initiative, which began on Monday, April 15, tailored to five zones in particular:

  • Brighton Avenue between Taft Avenue and Stevens Avenue
  • Preble Street between Kennebec Street and Congress Street
  • Cumberland Avenue between Forest Avenue and State Street
  • Free Street, Center Street, York Street between Fore Street and High Street,
  • Danforth Street between State Street and Vaughan Street

This long-term project is synchronized with local city and state road projects along with Unitil’s routine maintenance of its gas infrastructure.

In Portland, Maine, 10 miles of gas main were replaced or upgraded to a higher pressure this year.

“This season Unitil has made substantial progress on this multi-year project. We continue to make system reliability a priority for our customers–and improving natural gas infrastructure is a demonstration of our commitment to quality. As always, we are grateful to the residents and businesses in the Portland area for their continued cooperation while city-wide upgrades are being made to the system.
