Over a million kilowatt hours of clean energy generated by the facility in first year of operations
October 31, 2018
Hampton, NH

Unitil Corporation, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, is estimating that it’s “Solarway” facility has generated more than 1.26 million kilowatt hours during its first year of service, enough electricity to power more than 175 homes for an entire year.

Over 3,700 solar panels were installed on the site of 115 Sawyer Passway, Fitchburg to create a 1.3 megawatt  facility. The site has a long history dating back to the 1850’s of various forms of gas and electric energy production and delivery systems. Most recently, the site was the location of a fossil fuel burning power plant, but the plant was shuttered as part of the Electric Industry Restructuring Act of the late-1990s.

We couldn’t be more pleased with the output of Solarway, which is producing clean and renewable energy for the community exactly as designed. It’s great to see this land back to its historical role of energy production for the city.

Alec O’Meara, Unitil Media Relations Manager

The panels that occupy the equivalent of 13 football fields, further expanded Unitil’s renewable energy portfolio in support of the state’s Green Communities Act, which was signed into law in 2008.
