CUSTOMER SERVICE

Unitil customers in New Hampshire receiving calls demanding payment for service
July 26, 2018
Hampton, NH

Unitil Corporation, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, is advising customers to be aware of a current scam operating in New Hampshire this afternoon.

Multiple Unitil customers have been calling customer service reporting they’d been contacted by phone by a business claiming to be Unitil or represent Unitil. The caller demands that the customer make a payment, typically via a pre-paid card, within minutes or disconnection will occur. Unitil is not making these calls; this is a version of a known telephone scam that preys upon unwitting customers. These calls initially involved only Massachusetts customers earlier this week, but have begun occurring in New Hampshire as well this afternoon.

We have seen and heard of versions of this scam in several different regions, where the caller claims to be a variety of different utilities. If you get a call from someone claiming to be Unitil that demands an immediate payment in a specific format, like a pre-paid card, or face immediate disconnection, that’s not us. Hang up and call our customer service team directly so you know you are speaking to us. You can also go to Unitil.com to see the status of your account for yourself.
