Position Description: 

The Director of Human Resources will be accountable for the daily operations and oversight of Unitil’s Human Resources functions including compliance, compensation, employee and labor relations, employee engagement, staffing, training, benefits administration and development of policies and procedures.   Responsibilities will include:

  • Recommend, implement and maintain base pay, incentive pay, equity compensation and employee benefit programs and policies to support the hiring and retention of qualified employees.  Work closely with actuaries, attorneys, and consultants.
  • Assist department heads, managers and employees with the resolution of employee relations problems through direct intervention, diagnosis and recommendations for corrective actions.  Work with attorneys to minimize legal risk.  Contribute to the negotiation of labor agreements and the settlement of grievances.
  • Manage the timely and accurate processing of payroll, administration of personnel policies and the maintenance of related personnel files and records.
  • Oversee Human Resources policies and programs and ensure they remain compliant with state and federal laws and regulations including but not limited to IRS, ERISA, DOL, EEOC, DOT, OSHA, ADA, FMLA, Immigration, and Labor law.
  • Works to maximize collaboration, teamwork, empowerment, achievement and responsibility.  Promotes open communications with all employees and encourages their feedback.  Fosters an environment of honesty and trust. 
  • Direct the preparation of the annual HR budget.  Represent the Company at regulatory proceedings on matters related to employee compensation and benefits.  Testify under oath as needed.
  • Direct the timely delivery of employee orientation, skills development, management education and leadership development to support a qualified and motivated workforce.
Qualifications: 

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Master’s degree preferred with ten (10) or more years of experience managing a variety of HR functions.  At least three (3) years in an HR management position. 
  • Professional designations in Human Resources, Compensation, Benefits and/or Payroll.
  • Advanced ability to express oneself verbally and in writing.  Strong public speaking/presentation skills.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze and diagnose conflicts between people and lead others to a mutually beneficial outcome.
  • Advanced desktop computer skills.
