Construction phase in downtown Portland completed on schedule
June 24, 2013
Portland, ME

Unitil, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England is entering the next phase of its System Upgrade for Reliable Energy (SURE) project and is beginning work in Portland’s Stevens Avenue neighborhood. The Unitil SURE project, a 14-year project now in year three, will modernize the Portland-Westbrook area's gas infrastructure, making it more reliable and better able to meet the growing demand for natural gas in Maine.

“As we continue our construction work, we’re able to extend natural gas service to new customers who live near the existing pipeline,” said Alec O’Meara, media relations manager, Unitil. “If you’ve ever thought about switching to natural gas, now is the time to explore options, not this fall.”

Customers and businesses interested in switching to natural gas should visit www.unitil.com/switch and use the "Gas Availability Tool" to learn if you might be eligible.

Unitil completed SURE project construction and excavation work in downtown Portland on schedule in May. Cast iron pipes in downtown Portland – some more than 100 years old – were replaced with state-of-the art, high-density plastic pipe. By replacing older cast iron pipes with plastic, Unitil has assured that downtown Portland has natural gas infrastructure equipped to meet the growing gas needs of the local economy.

“We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of downtown Portland businesses and residents as we completed our downtown construction work this spring,” said Matt Doughty, SURE Project manager, Unitil. “By working closely with the City of Portland, we were able to upgrade the energy infrastructure in downtown Portland safely, efficiently and as quickly as possible ahead of the busy tourist season.”

Unitil’s SURE project construction in Stevens Avenue area and in Westbrook will continue into the fall. For the latest information about the SURE project and construction schedules, please visit www.ngupgrade.com or call Unitil’s toll-free hotline 1-866-821-4386.
