$5,000 Scholarship Supports Engineering, Math and Science Education Students
June 13, 2012
Hampton, NH

Unitil Corporation, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, is proud to announce the 2012 recipients of the Unitil Scholarship Fund. The program was created in 2011 to support students who demonstrate outstanding potential for careers in engineering, math, technology or science. Five high school seniors from the company’s service territories in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts pursuing degrees in these areas will each receive $5,000 for their first year of undergraduate study.

These students are:

  • William West of Loudon, New Hampshire, a graduate of Merrimack Valley High School. William plans to study environmental engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
  • Brad Fagan of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, a graduate of Winnacunnet High School. Brad plans to study chemical engineering at the University of Virginia.
  • Corinne Wyson of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, a graduate of Lunenburg High School. Corinne plans to study mathematics at Boston College.
  • Daniel Kaczmarek of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a graduate of Portsmouth High School. Daniel plans to study mechanical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
  • Kyle LeBorgne of Portland, Maine, a graduate of Portland High School. Kyle plans to study mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Also as part of the program, a sixth student who is the child of a Unitil employee was also awarded a scholarship. Sarah Kahl of Brookline, Massachusetts, a graduate of Brookline, High School, was selected to receive this unique award. Sarah plans to study environmental science at Oberlin College.

Each of the students was selected by a committee of Unitil employees local to their specific region. Upon receipt of registration in a degree program with a declared major or concentration in engineering, math, technology or science, Unitil will issue a $2,500 check on the student’s behalf for the fall term. The remaining balance will be paid prior to the start of the spring semester.

“Unitil works hard to promote careers in math, science, technology and engineering among our local graduates,” Unitil Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs Carol Valianti said. “Our hope is this scholarship aids these gifted students as they embark on the next phase of their educational careers.”

The Unitil Scholarship Fund joins the existing Unitil Energy Systems, Inc. Scholarship Program, which supports students from the Exeter Area, Sanborn Regional, Timberlane Regional and Winnacunnet high schools, as well as the Peter J. Stulgis Scholarship Fund for students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, NH. More information on the Unitil Scholarship Fund can be found at www.unitil.com.
