Utility Commits $50,000 to Support Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics-Focused Education
May 19, 2011
Unitil (www.unitil.com), a natural gas and electric delivery company with residential and business customers throughout New England, today announced the opening of the Unitil Program Center at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center (www.starhop.com) in Concord, NH. Bob Schoenberger, Unitil’s president and CEO, and Paul Burkett, Esq., chair of the commission that oversees the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, were joined by Erle Pierce, vice president and capital campaign chair of Touch the Future, Inc., the not-for-profit dedicated to supporting expansion plans and programs at the Discovery Center, as well as 29 second grade students from Moultonborough Central School and representatives from both organizations this morning to celebrate the opening.
The Unitil Program Center will host a variety of hands-on educational opportunities focused in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Unitil recently committed $50,000 over the next five years to support STEM-related programs at the Discovery Center.
“As a company, Unitil is committed to finding opportunities to promote education initiatives grounded in science, math, engineering and technology,” said Schoenberger. “To support this classroom here, in a building named after this state’s most famous teacher, is both an honor and a privilege.”
Following a welcome from Pierce and remarks from Schoenberger and Burkett, the day’s agenda included a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, an educational activity focused on space shuttles in which both students and Unitil volunteers participated and model rocket launch. According to Pierce, Unitil's financial support is really an investment in the future. "Today's dedication of the Unitil Program Center not only signifies Unitil's ongoing commitment to the communities where they live and work, but to developing a future workforce that has been inspired by the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. We thank Unitil for their support."
