Volunteers aid 64 nonprofits
September 16, 2011
Seacoast Online

...United Way recruits volunteers from various businesses to join a day of projects at the request of the nonprofit organizations. Participants worked from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. painting, building and cleaning their assigned centers.

In Exeter, Unitil workers raked, mulched, planted and cleaned out play stations at the Great Bay Kids Company, a preschool for children up to the age 5. Unitil volunteers also helped at the preschool last spring.

"They're very hard workers," said program director Holly Davis. "It's actually very exciting for the kids having a fresh new playground."

Davis cited the experience as a great way for workers at the center to get to know other people in the community.

According to Unitil employee Mike Burke, company employees are allowed to participate in volunteer events throughout the year. "Our senior management participates in this as well and they're very supportive," he said. "I think there's a lot of need with the nonprofit agencies."

Burke said he assumes nonprofits like the Great Bay Kids have economic struggles and would have to pay vendors to clean the site if it weren't for the volunteers.
