By law, anyone planning to excavate is required to call Dig Safe® at 811 at least three, working days (72 hours) before any disturbance begins. Dig Safe® is an underground damage prevention call center system which notifies the applicable utilities (comprised primarily of water, cable, electric, natural gas, and telecommunication companies) of your excavation activities. Dig Safe® is not the company that performs the locating of the underground facilities. Each utility is responsible for performing the location of their own facilities.
Whether you are planting trees as part of a landscaping project or building an addition or business, avoid property damage, personal injury, and possible fines by contacting the Dig Safe® one-call system before you start to dig. At no cost to residential customers, the system will notify the companies of your planned work so that they may mark the approximate locations of their buried utilities, which might be in or near your work area. Please wait for the utilities to mark out their facilities before you start your project, and respect the marks that have been made, digging with care.
If you damage a natural gas pipeline or electric equipment while digging, you endanger not only your safety but the safety of others, as well. You may also be responsible for the cost of repairing a damaged utility. And if you have retained contractors to work for you, then make sure they call the Dig Safe® one-call system before any disturbance begins.
