Help Unitil keep power lines free of vegetation and protect your own lines from outages by planning your landscaping. Make sure to take into account the tree’s full growth potential and mature height. Choose trees and shrubs carefully, considering these questions:

How will your tree be used?

  • Energy savings – shade in the summer, winter wind protection
  • Privacy screen
  • Prevention of soil erosion
  • Seasonal color – spring flowers, fall foliage
  • Wildlife attraction

What are the tree’s health and growth characteristics?

  • Height, width, shape and growth rate
  • Climate, sun and water needs – see Zone 6 list below
  • Soil requirements – do you have the right site conditions?
  • Ability to resist disease, insects, pollution, and weather conditions

Does your tree meet clearance requirements for overhead and underground electric lines?
Before planting any tree – choose a species and location that keeps the tree clear of overhead and away from underground electric lines. Proper tree species selection and placement avoids utility line conflicts in the future.
