We support the idea that our customers should explore all options available and that they are free to make a decision on an energy contract that is right for them.  Should you choose to switch to another energy supplier, Unitil will continue to deliver your energy, respond to service and emergency needs, and provide storm restoration services.

If you are considering buying energy from an Energy Supplier, make sure to exercise smart shopping sense, as you would with any other transaction.  Before obtaining prices from Energy Suppliers, know the price you are currently paying for BasicEnergy service found on your bill.  Then contact the Energy Supplier and make sure to understand the following information:

  • What is the term of the contract?
  • Are there minimum bill amounts?
  • Are the energy prices fixed, or will they change from month to month?
  • Does the supplier have a customer service center or website?
  • Will the supplier bill you directly, or will charges be included on your Unitil statement?
  • Are there early termination fees associated with the contract?

The following energy suppliers have been approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public UtilitiesNew Hampshire Public Utilities Commission and have entered into an agreement with Unitil to supply electric service to retail customers.  Please contact the Energy Supplier directly for information about their pricing, services, contract terms, and other details about their offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose an independent Energy Supplier? Will I save money?

Choosing an Energy Supplier is a personal decision and Unitil encourages you to explore your energy supply options.  Whether or not you will save money depends on the agreement you reach with a supplier in terms of price, length of contract, and any restrictions with ending the agreement.  Unitil’s BasicEnergy Service Charge is adjusted periodically to reflect the company’s actual cost of purchasing the energy it needs to serve customers.

May I switch back to Unitil if I choose an Energy Supplier?

Yes.  Unitil is always available to supply your electric energy needs.  However, the Energy Supplier may require a penalty fee if you leave prior to the end of your agreement.  You may switch from Unitil to an Energy Supplier at any time with no penalty fee. However, your bill will be recalculated before the six-month period is over to reflect the variable rate. This ensures that you pay the actual costs of the electricity you have used. The adjustment may be a credit or debit, and will be reflected on your first bill after the switch is effective.

Will I receive more than one bill per month?

Should you choose an Energy Supplier, you may notice some changes to your monthly Unitil bill. The Company offers two billing options to Competitive Suppliers - they may choose to integrate their services with Unitil’s billing into a single mailing to the customer; or, they may opt to separately bill customers for the cost of energy supply services.

What can I do to protect myself from deceitful practices?

Ask for the full identity of the caller and the company they represent. Be certain the company is properly registered to supply energy.  Questions about energy suppliers can be directed to the Massachusetts Department of Public UtilitiesNew Hampshire Public Utilities Commission.

How do I enroll with an Energy Supplier?

Contact your chosen Energy Supplier and let them know you would like to begin buying your energy from them. They will most likely provide you with some type of contract or agreement. Your chosen Energy Supplier will then provide Unitil with your enrollment information to switch your energy supply provider.

If I have a question about my bill, whom do I call?

If your questions relate to the delivery portion of the bill, please contact us. For questions about the supply portion of the bill, contact your Energy Supplier.
