Here at Unitil, we encourage our electric customers to join the thousands of renewable self-generators who are generating their own renewable energy in parallel with existing electric system and install renewable energy systems on their property. While such a project can be an undertaking, you’ll be helping to offset your electric usage from your utility which can lower your monthly utility bill. You’ll also be joining a community of green-minded customers that support the development of renewable energy alternatives locally and nationally. If you’re considering a renewable generator installation or want to learn more about it, here is some information on how to get started.

The Interconnection Application and Approval Process

Before installing your own renewable energy system, we’d like to help you determine which application is right for you.  Here are a few things you and your contractor should know:

Step 1: Please review our Notice to Customers Interested in Net Metering. Read the instructions and fill out the appropriate application. An incomplete application can delay your request.

For customers connecting to radial electric power systems with power ratings up to 15 kW single-phase or up to 25 kW three-phase, or connecting to an area or spot network with a power rating of up to 15 kW single-phase, please review the instructions below and submit an application.
 
For customers with a power rating greater than 15 kW, please submit a standard application. For customers with power ratings greater than 500 kW, please submit a pre-application form prior to the standard application. 
 
For customer systems with power ratings up to 100 kVA, please submit the Simplified Application.
 
For customer systems greater than 100 kVA, please submit a pre-application form. Please include payment of $500 for processing of the Pre-Application. After submittal, you'll need to fill out the Standard Application. There is no fee required for processing of the Standard Application. 

 

Step 2: Submit the completed application to generator@unitil.com or drop it in the mail (our addresses are listed below). A Unitil representative will get back to the applicant within three business days with receipt of your paperwork. Within ten business days, a Unitil representative will respond to let the applicant know if the application is complete, or if there are required steps needed to complete your application. For single phase systems up to 15 kW or three-phase systems up to 25 kW, Unitil will notify the applicant of the approval to install within fifteen business days, or any system modifications required to allow for the installation within ten twenty business days after the application is considered complete. For larger systems, please contact Unitil to discuss your project.

Step 3: Once the applicant has received installation approval from Unitil, be sure to share this information with the vendor or installer.

Step 4: Once the generator is installed, Unitil will provide the applicant with a Certificate of Completion that must be returned to our office, signed by the local municipal wiring inspector.

Step 5: After receipt of the applicant's signed Certificate of Completion, Unitil will notify the applicant of certification documents or witness test requirements. Once these requirements are met, Unitil will replace the standard meter with a net meter. At this point, the applicant will be notified of approval to use the generating system.

Step 6: Use this approval form to qualify for state and federal rebates and enjoy the benefits of renewable generation! A monthly bill will show an “Other Credits” line item, listed near the bottom if the system generated more electricity than was used in that billing period. If the system did not generate excess energy (more than the monthly consumption), the customer will not see this credit.

 

Installation Tips

  • Familiarize yourself with the generation interconnection process at Unitil. Email us here or call 603-773-6480 with questions.
  • Research your installation company. The Public Utilities CommissionThe Department of Public Utilities is a good resource for interconnection and net metering questions, and to confirm the legitimacy of a business.

  • Get an electrical permit from your town. You may be required to obtain a building permit before or in addition to an electrical permit. Please contact your town or city hall for information.
